GENESIS 24
1Now Abraham was old, and well advanced in age, and the LORD had blessed him in all things.
2Abraham said to his servant, the senior one of his household, who had charge over all that he had, Please place your hand under my thigh.
3I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I dwell.
4But you will go to my country, and to my kindred, to find a wife for my son Isaac.
5The servant asked him, Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land. Shall I then take your son back to the land from where you came?
6Abraham said to him, Be careful to never take my son back there again.
7The LORD, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house, and the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, To your offspring I will give this land; He will send His angel before you so that you may find a wife for my son from there.
8If the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be clear from my oath; but you must not take my son there.
9So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham, and swore to him concerning this matter.
10Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and departed; taking all kinds of gifts from his master. He set out for Aram-naharaim, to the city of Nahor.
11And when he had made his camels kneel down by the well outside the city, at evening, the time when women go out to draw water,
12He prayed, O LORD God of my master Abraham, guide me today and be faithful to my master Abraham.
13Here I stand by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water.
14Now let it be, that the girl to whom I shall say, Please lower your pitcher that I may drink; and she answers, Drink and I will give your camels water also. Let her be she that You have chosen for your servant Isaac. In this way I will know that You have been faithful to my master.
15Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, who was the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother.
16Now the young woman was very beautiful, a virgin whom no man had known. She went down to the well, filled her pitcher, and came back up.
17Abraham's servant ran to meet her and said, Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher.
18Drink, my lord, she replied, and quickly lowered the pitcher from her hand and gave him a drink.
19When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.
20And she hurried, emptied her pitcher into the trough, ran back to the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.
21Silently the man watched her with interest, wondering whether the LORD had made his journey a success or not.
22After the camels had finished drinking, the man took a golden nose ring of half a shekel weight, and two gold bracelets of ten shekels weight of gold and gave them to her.
23Whose daughter are you, he asked? Tell me, is there room in your father's house for us to lodge in?
24She answered, I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.
25Then she added, We have plenty of straw and fodder, and room to lodge in.
26And the man bowed his head and worshipped the LORD.
27Then said, Praised be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken His mercy and His faithfulness toward my master. The LORD has led me to the house of my master's brother!
28The young woman ran and told her mother's household all these things.
29Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and Laban ran out to meet the man at the well.
30When he saw the bracelets on his sister's hands and the nose ring, and when he heard his sister Rebekah say, This is what the man said to me; he went out to meet the man. And there he stood by the camels at the well.
31Laban said to him, Come, you who are blessed of the LORD! Why are you standing out here when I have prepared the house and a place for your camels?
32So Abraham's servant went to the house and he unloaded the camels. Straw and fodder were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet.
33When food was set before him, he said, I will not eat, until I have told of my errand. And Laban said, Speak on.
34And he said, I am Abraham's servant.
35And the LORD has richly blessed my master; and he has become great. The LORD has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, and camels and donkeys.
36And Sarah, my master's wife, bore a son to my master when she was old, and my master has given to him everything he owns.
37And my master made me swear, saying, You must not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell;
38But you must go to my father's house, and to my kindred, to find a wife for my son.
39And I said to my master, Perhaps the woman will not follow me.
40And he said to me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send His angel with you. He will prosper your way; and you will find a wife for my son from among my kindred, from my father's house.
41You will be clear from this oath if you come to my kindred and if they will not give her to you. Then you will be released from my oath.
42And I came this day to the well, and prayed, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if You will now prosper the way in which I go;
43Here I am, standing by this well of water; and when the young woman comes out to draw water, and I say to her, Please lower your pitcher that I may drink.
44And she says to me, Drink, and I will give your camels water also; let her be the woman whom the LORD has chosen for my master's son.
45Before I had finished praying in my heart, along came Rebekah with her pitcher on her shoulder! And she went down to the well, and drew water, and I said to her, Please give me a drink.
46She quickly lowered her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give your camels a drink also. So I drank, and she watered the camels also.
47And I asked her, Whose daughter are you? She replied, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him. So I put the ring in her nose, and the bracelets on her wrists.
48Then I bowed down my head and worshipped the LORD. I praised the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who led me by the right way to find the daughter of my master's brother for his son.
49Now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me. But if not, tell me also, so that I may go on my way.
50Then Laban and Bethuel answered, This is the LORD's doing, our wishes are of no concern.
51Rebekah stands before you. Take her and go, let her be the wife of your master's son, as the LORD has decided.
52When Abraham's servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.
53Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious gifts to her brother and her mother.
54Then he, and the men that were with him, ate and drank and stayed the night. When they rose the next morning, he said, Let me leave now so that I can return to my master.
55But her brother and her mother said, Let the girl stay with us a few more days, perhaps ten; then you may go.
56And he said to them, Do not delay me, seeing the LORD has prospered my way. Give me leave now so that I may return to my master.
57They said, We will call the girl and ask her.
58They called Rebekah and asked her, Do you want to go with this man? She replied, I want to go.
59So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way; along with her nurse, Abraham's servant and his men.
60And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, Our sister, may you become the mother of millions, and may your offspring possess the gates of their enemies.
61Then Rebekah and her female servants rose, mounted the camels, and rode away with the man. So Abraham's servant took Rebekah and left.
62Now Isaac had come from Beer-lahai-roi; for he dwelt in Negeb.
63And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening and, looking up, he saw the camels approaching.
64When Rebekah looked up and saw Isaac, she got down from her camel,
65And asked Abraham's servant, Who is the man walking in the field to meet us? The servant replied, It is my master. So she took a veil and covered herself.
66Then the servant told Isaac everything that had happened.
67Isaac then brought Rebekah into his mother Sarah's tent. He took her as his wife and loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.
