GENESIS 28
1So Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, saying, You must not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.
2Go now to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, your mother's father. Find yourself a wife there, from the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.
3May God Almighty bless you. May He make you fruitful and multiply you, so that you may become a large nation.
4May He give to you and your offspring the blessing of Abraham, so that you may inherit the land where you are a stranger; the land that God gave to Abraham.
5So Isaac sent Jacob on his way. He went to Paddan-aram, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Syrian, Rebekah's brother, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.
6When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Paddan-aram, to find a wife there; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, You must not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan;
7And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and had gone to Padanaram;
8Esau realised that the daughters of Canaan did not please his father, Isaac.
9So Esau went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth, and daughter of Abraham's son, Ishmael, along with the wives he already had.
10Jacob left Beersheba, and set out for Haran.
11He came to a certain place where he decided to camp, as the sun had set. He took one of the stones there, and using it as a pillow, he lay down in that place and fell asleep.
12And he dreamed and saw a ladder set up on the earth, with its top reaching to the heavens; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
13And the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham, and the God of Isaac. The land where you lay, I will give to you and your offspring.
14And your offspring will be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.
15Know that I am with you. I will protect you wherever you go, and will bring you back again to this land. I will not leave you until I have done all I have promised you.
16When Jacob woke from his sleep, he said, Surely the LORD is in this place and I did not know it.
17He was afraid and said, How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
18And Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had placed under his head, set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on top of it.
19He called that place Bethel; which was before that called Luz.
20Then Jacob made a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and protect me on this journey I am taking, and will give me bread to eat, and clothes to wear,
21So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then the LORD will be my God.
22And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, will be the house of God; and of all that You give me, I will surely give a tenth back to You.
